Balbriggan Harbour Seals are a very common sight in the harbours along the north Dublin coast where they scavenge for fish from the trawlers. They are generally seen in pairs or threes and the morning this was taken there were two in the harbour. The castle was once the home of the Archbishop of Dublin and is currently being restored by Fingal County Council. A medieval encampment was established in the grounds of the castle for the weekend of the festival. Among the attractions was a falconry display which featured a number of birds of prey. These beautiful birds have either been rescued or bred in captivity as part of an effort to conserve Ireland’s natural heritage. Large quantities of corn and timber were exported and coal, slate and salt were among the main items imported. During the 1780's two large cotton mills were developed and the town prospered as a result of this commercial activity. Emer's father Forgall refused to give permission for her to marry Cuchulainn because, like generations of Irish fathers, he thought his daughter could do better. In keeping with many tales from Irish mythology the row ended in a fight. The "Wall" as it is commonly remembered was the fourth and final generation and was constructed of tall, inverted T shaped concrete slabs, with round capping on top (seen at the bottom of the photograph). This was the formal border wall. Beyond that lay the "Death Strip" where soldiers were ordered to shoot to kill any unauthorised intruders. This was typically a raked sandy strip with an access/patrol road. Contrary to popular myth the "Death Strip" was not booby trapped with anti personnel mines or automatic machine guns, unlike the former West / East Germany border. The GDR built over 300 watch towers, of which only two survive. For residents of the East Berlin the Wall was marked by a lower barricade called the Hinterland Wall (with horizontal slabs, at the top of the photograph). Only trusted residents were allowed access as far as this section of the wall. https://imageproxy.viewbook.com/652aea207effcc14ad79d724427cb154_hd.jpg The Graves “Our life is but a little holding, lent to do mighty labour” - Inscription on the grave of Captain Douglas Wearing, Royal Army Medical Corp, died 11 November 1918, buried Kings Island Military Cemetery, Limerick The Commonwealth War Graves Commission lists 2,602 casualties who are buried in graveyards in the Republic of Ireland who died during the period from 4 August 1914 to 31 August 1921. Nine of these died on the 11 November 1918, the day the War finished and well away from the main conflict in Europe. Four of the soldiers were Irish; two were Scottish; two were English and one possibly was Welsh. It is probable that the Irish soldiers were transferred back to Ireland after being wounded in action and subsequently died of their injuries. But how did so many British soldiers die? The British practice was to bury war dead on or near the field of battle, unlike the Americans who generally repatriated war dead. It appears unlikely that any were the victims of the unrest in Ireland. Armistice Day occurred during one of the few quiet times in an unstable period in Irish history. Three of the soldiers belonged to the Army support corps (one was a Captain in the Royal Army Medical Corp, one was in the bakery corps and one was a messenger). It is also possible that one soldier may have fought in Gallipoli and maybe he was wounded there.
